Rene' M. Perlich (Nadeau-Dailey) Hello! My name is Rene' Marcell Nadeau ( Perlich ) and I am a housewife living in southern California. Yes, I said housewife! My parents did not understand the feminine/masculine accenting of names and so I have - in effect - a man's name! I did not find this out until I took French in high school. My instructor was born in France and, understandably, she was quite surprised by my gender! Never did well in that class as she took offense to the spelling of my name - and my struggle with the language. Oh well. Getting back to genealogy, my father is Raymond Nadeau, b 1928 in Butte, Montana, USA. His father ( my grandfather) was Raymond Oscar Nadeau, b. 1902 in Butte, Montana - d. 1964 in Northridge, California. His father was Peter Timothy Nadeau. My grandfather ( Raymond Oscar) had 2 sisters - Emily and Linda. He was the youngest. There was a first born son - who would have been the oldest - who died at age 8. His name was Artige ( sp??). Not real sure on the spelling. We do not know for absolute certainty if Peter Timothy Nadeau was born in Butte, Montana, but it is rumored to be so. Regardless, Peter passed away in 1911 after a year long battle with injuries that he received from a mugging. He owned a variety of businesses in Butte, one being a wood and coal yard. He was sorting out the payroll in order to pay his workers when he was ambushed in his place of work. He was beaten pretty badly. Consequently, he was unable to keep the 'yard' open and lost that business. I have a photo of my grandfather taken in front of their home in Butte on his way to school. He is about 8-9 years old. From what my father has said, the main line came over from Bordeaux, France several centuries ago - first settling in Canada, then moving south to New Orleans, LA., then back to Canada, then back into the U. S.. We do not know if they hit Minnesota first before venturing west to Montana. This is the mystery! If any of your 'members' have records or stories relating to a branch of the Nadeau clan that went west during the gold and silver rush ( I am assuming that is what inspired the westward journey. Silver was a big thing in Montana - that and coal!), I would love to hear from them! I have been in contact with a Remy Nadeau - descendent of Joseph Osssany Nadeau and a prolific writer of California history books. He resides in Santa Barbara, California. Remy's gggrandfather was a Joseph Nadeau who emigrated from Kamouraska, Canada in the early to mid 1800's into Minnesota. He eventually went west - without is family - to seek his fortune, which he found in southern California. His wife and children eventually were sent for. There is a street in the deepest darkest part of Los Angeles that bears his name! I refuse to go there, though. Too many gang bangers!!! :)) There was also a Nadeau Hotel that he constructed, which was the tallest building in Los Angeles at the time it was built - 5 stories high!!! It has since been replaced, of course! Anyway, I had fun searching through your cyber archives. Great collection of stories and photos! If this venue is not the proper site to address my questions ( I searched for message boards, etc., without success!), please let me know and direct me to the correct one! Thank you so much for all the work you have done on the Nadeau clan. Blessings and peace with abundant joy to you! Sincerely, Rene' M. Perlich ( Nadeau-Dailey)
Visit with Jay Mortell Hello Richard, My name is Jay Mortell, I live in Green Bay Wisconsin. I am a Nadeau. My grandfather was Emile George Nadeau ( Dr. E. G. ) he was the youngest in the family and died in 1983 ..he was born in 1892 the only one in his imediate family born in the U. S. I believe the rest were born in Quebec. E.G. was born in Marinette Wi. the son of (a) Jean-Baptiste, the son of Joseph(Marie Olympe Leboef), son of Joseph (Archange Pinet), son of Joseph (Marie Genevieve Dube), son of Jean-Baptiste (Madeleine Blondeau), son of Louis (Genevieve Duquet).........possibly the son of Jean-Baptiste (Anne Casse) What I am not sure of is the connection between Louis Nadeau (b1712-d1735) and Jean-Baptiste/Anne Casse. I believe he was one of 14 that JB and Anne produced. My uncertianty is that on my tree there is not a direct line. In additon, I have in my posession the geneology book written by Cecile Nadeau, RSM on the Nadeau family. She was the daughter of Jean-Baptiste, son of Godefroid,Sr.. This J. B. moved to Marinette, Wi. in 1889. Now there are two J. B. Nadeau's living in Marinette.....This JB and my great-grandfather! My great-grandfather had been in Marinette for apx. ten years. the following is a clip from the Mainette county centenial The M&M Box Company was built by John B. Nadeau (father of Dr. A.T. Nadeau) for Cook and Rathborne of Chicago. Incorporated by Hastings, McNeil and Nichols in 1890, the factory was sold to the Peninsular Box and Lumber Company of Menominee in 1916. In 1927, it was purchased by the Coffey brothers, and is today under the management of the Coffey family. JB son of Godefroid,sr. moved to Marinette at age 20 in 1989......J.B (my great-grandfather had been there a couple of years by then). Can you shed any light on how Louis fits in? I would love to hear from you .........as you can see there is no line between Louis and first JB.....it is puzzling to me! ........More to come. Thank you ! Jay Mortell Hello Richard, I think I found the link ........it appears that JB and his wife "Anne Casse" moved in or about 1709 to Beaumont from Levis with two children JB and Marguerite and in 1712 Anne had twin boys Louis and Joseph. What I have shows the Louis born in 1712 is the son of Jean B. and Anne Casse. Why he(they) don't appear to be covered is appearently JB and Anne Casse somewhere along the way moved back to Beaumont .....I think it had something to do with them no being able to get the first two children baptised at St. Etienne de Beaumont as there may not have been a parish established yet.....( my french is not too good, and what I have is all in french!) This would make sense as Antoine was born in 1726 in Beaumont presumably after the church was established. My understanding is the first two children of JB and Anne were not baptised until a few years after they were born.( In Margaret case perhaps 7years!, rare in those days. ) Jay
Hi Jay: From my record it seems that Louis was the son of Denis (not Jean) who was the son of J-Ossanee. The error was corrected by Sister Nadeau who wrote the other geneology book. That is the reason that you do not see a line in your reference--the author reached a dead-end because he based his information on the uncorrected record. Richard Nadeau Hello, My cousin, E.G. Nadeau did some research on the Nadeau family and feels that Sr. Nadeau has made a few errors. I was wrong when I stated that JB and Marguerite were not baptised for a few years......I misunderstood what I was reading..( copy attached) they were baptised in Levis county rather that Beaumont, as at Beaumont there was not yet an established parish.....perhaps that is why there is some mix up. However it is quite clear from what I have that Louis and Joseph were twins of JB and Anne Casse......It is possible that there is a Louis by Denis who missing in all of this. The information on JB and Anne Casse's children is more complete here than in Sr. Nadeau's accounting. Something bugs me, she was born in Marinette, her father was in Marinette and lived down the street from my Great grand father also a JB , yet she does not mention him or his family abit. My great grandfather was in Marinette prior to her father's arrival. He must have moved there knowing there was family there. Also, she does not mention Joe O's other children, Mari older sister of JB and there was a Benjamin, who was about 8months old when Joe O died. Attached are a few pages of what I have. Let me know if you recieved them in a readable fashion. There will be 3 pages .Where this comes from is a genealogy of My Greatgrandfather JB and his wife Marie-Louise Drolet it is about 60 pages in total Jay I have a couple of things for you.....one is a record that Denis' son Louis was born April 1 1715 and died a few days later 4/5/1715 where as JB's son Louis was born in 1712. The other thing is: on your web site you a letter from Rene Perlich of Calf., she mentions Remi Nadeau a writer, ( he was with the 20 Mule team that Borax was associated with in the 50's TV show) was the Uncle of my great grand father JB. Just more information for you ..........It finally warmed up here in Wisconsin ...how about Maine? Today is about 40 out .....better that the -10 of two days ago! Regards, Jay
With regard to the "Michigan Clan"....there is upper Michigan and lower Michigan ......there seems to be a mess of Nadeau's in lower Michigan ...whereas my family was settled in Marinette which is on the Wis. upper Michigan border ...(Marinette and Menomonee ) Sr. Cecile, again was born in Marinette as were a couple of her siblings... also there is a Nadeau Michigan about 40 miles north of Marinette....I am goin up that way tomorrow to Marinette ...and intend to stop at the cemetary.Do I use the address on the web site to mail stuff to you? Again, thank you for your hard work. ...Jay
