Poison Plants

I urge that persons using these pictures not rely solely on one source of information in the identification of plants. I usually use three different reference sources, for safety's sake. Even then, mistakes are made (primarily clerical) which could be dissastrous if  you were to use only this source for identification.

If you find any errors or can fill in the missing identifyers, please contribute. I will be happy to give you credit.


False or White Hellebore in flower (Veratrum viride)

Highly or fatally toxic although it is used in phamaceutical drugs to slow heart rate, lower blood pressure;  for arteriosclerosis, forms of nephritis. Powdered root used as insecticide


Sheep Laurel, Sheepkill, Lambkill, Calfkill (Kalmia angustifolia)

Highly toxic, even in small amounts although Native Americans used minute amounts for medecine


Intermediate Dogbane (Apocynum medium)

poisonous: Cymarin, a cardiactive glycoside poisons cattle
