Raoul Nadeau

When Ann and I were first married, we lived in a new trailer park in Poland Spring Maine. Our landlord, who lived at the trailer park and maintained it, was Ralph Poland, a hard working and enterprising fellow who, unfortunately, was an alcoholic. One day, he reported to us that he had inadvertently poured concentrated DDT in the well, mistaking it for chlorine.  Since he was always under the influence, we can assume that he was drunk at the time. This had happened days before. He asked that we not drink the well water for several days until it cleared. Ann was a couple of months pregnant at the time. A friend and neighbor was also pregnant but much further advanced in pregnancy. This friend later died of cancer. She had also been drinking the well water.

Ralph, as a consequence of the DDT, was born totally deformed and died after birth. He is buried with his grandfather, John Dobson, in Pittsfield, Me.

Our friends child was also born with leg deformities but survived. Our friend later died of cancer and her husband took his life.
